ND Interpretive Programs - August 2006

PLEASE NOTE: all programs are subject to cancellation and/or rescheduling due to staff limitations, weather conditions, or other factors. Some programs require reservations, a minimum age, or a cost-recovery fee. Call 386-428-3384 ext. 10 for program information during operating hours (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). www.nps.gov/cana. Entrance fees apply to all interpretive program participants. All programs meet the requirements for the Canaveral National Seashore Junior Ranger program.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 4TH—1:00PM –“OYSTER REEF BUILDING”-The Nature Conservancy is coordinating a project to restore oyster reefs in the Mosquito Lagoon, within Canaveral National Seashore. We need volunteers to help make oyster shell “mats”. These mats serve as the building blocks for the oyster reefs. Gayle Hoffman will provide background information and basic mat-making instruction. It’s a simple and fun way to help an important project. Meet at the pavilion behind the Visitor Information Center. (2 hours)

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10TH AND AUGUST 24TH-1:00 PM-“FISH MOSQUITO LAGOON” Learn tips and tricks for fishing the waters of Mosquito Lagoon. Bring your own tackle if you can, we have some supplies. Bring water and sunscreen. Meet at the Visitor Information Center. (2 hours)

THURSDAY, AUGUST 17TH AND AUGUST 31TH-1:00 PM- “HOOK, LINE AND SINKER” Bait, rigs and tackle tips will be discussed for surf fishing on Apollo Beach, along with the rules and regulations for keeping what you catch. Bring water and sunscreen. We have a few rods; feel free to bring your own. Meet at the Visitor Information Center. (2 hour)

SUNDAY, AUGUST 20TH -11:00 AM- “BODY BOARD WITH A RANGER” Join a National Park Service Lifeguard and learn beach safety and body board techniques. We have some boards; bring your own if you have one. Remember to bring sunscreen and water. Meet at Parking Area #1B. (1 hour)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 25TH -10:00 AM-“CLAMMING 101” Learn techniques, regulations, lore and clam trivia. Wear covered shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Sunscreen and water encouraged. Meet at parking area #1. (1 hour)
