Virginia Man Drowns at Cape Lookout National Seashore

Cape Lookout National Seashore

National Park News

A thirty-three year old man, Kevin Mark Emerson, of Jetersville, Virginia died Monday in an apparent drowning accident at Cape Lookout National Seashore. The victim was part of a family group staying at the Long Point Concession Cabins on North Core Banks. Emerson was playing in the surf with four children, when an apparent rip tide pulled all but one of the group approximately 50-100 yards into the ocean. One of the children was not caught in the riptide and was able to run to the nearby cabin and summon help. Mr. John Rosenberry, father of two of the children rushed into the water and rescued two of the children. Emerson rescued the third child tossing him to Rosenberry before being swept further out into the water. Witnesses credited the actions of Emerson and Rosenberry for saving the lives of the children.

National Park Service staff and park visitors assisted in pulling Emerson from the water. CPR was performed until the emergency medical transport helicopter, Pedro, arrived from nearby Cherry Point Naval Air Station, which transported him to Carteret General Hospital, in Morehead City, North Carolina.
