Invitation to the Night: Night Walks Offered at Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park

National Park News

Starting July 1, ranger-naturalists at Badlands National Park will present the popular night program, the Night Prowl, at 10 p.m. nightly, immediately following the Evening Program. The program will leave from in front of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, located adjacent to the Badlands Loop Road at park headquarters, two miles east of the town of Interior. The Night Prowl begins after the Evening Program, held at 9 p.m. in the theater of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. We have visitors drive from as far away as Denver and Minneapolis to go on the Night Prowl, says Marianne Mills, Director of Resource Education for the park. We have natural quiet, clean air, and terrific night conditions. It’s also a safe environment in which to explore the night. Effective August 1, the Night Prowl will move to 9:30 p.m. and the Evening Program to 8:30 p.m.

No reservations are required to attend the Night Prowl. Those interested should wear sturdy shoes with closed toes and bring something to site on, such as a blanket or a cushion. The walk covers approximately 400 meters of relatively flat terrain and ends in a natural “amphitheater” in the Badland formations. Program topics vary according to the ranger and may be night animals, night sounds, or night sky. The program lasts approximately an hour. Those under 18 years of age should be accompanied by an adult.
