Grand Junction Man Drowns at Blue Mesa

Curecanti National Recreation Area

National Park News

A Grand Junction man drowned in Blue Mesa Reservoir Tuesday, July 4th, after apparently falling overboard. Glen Shook, 77 of Grand Junction, Colorado had stayed overnight in his cabin cruiser on the West Elk arm of Colorado’s largest body of water. At approximately 6:30 am, Mr. Shook was attempting to retrieve driftwood from the water, when he fell overboard. An attempt by the passenger on the boat to throw a floatable cushion failed, the passenger then radioed for help on the boat’s marine band radio. The National Park Service was notified, and responded within the hour. The body was recovered by an NPS diver in approximately six feet of water.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is located in Curecanti National Recreation Area and receives over one million visitors per year. The National Park Service reminds visitors to Blue Mesa Reservoir to always wear personal flotation devices, as the icy-cold, high altitude waters make swimming and rescue extremely difficult.
