On Friday, July 7, 2006, the public can exchange a quarter for five of the “Return to Monticello” nickels at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. The coin exchange will take place at the Visitor Center from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Coins will be provided by Union State Bank of Stanton and Branch Manager Cheri Stromme will be at the park for the exchange.
The “Return to Monticello” nickel is the fifth and final design in the series. The series began with the Peace Medal nickel, followed by the Keelboat nickel, the Bison nickel and the “Ocean in View! O! The joy!” nickel.
The “Return to Monticello” nickel commemorates the successful completion of Lewis and Clark’s expedition and its safe return to St. Louis in September 1806. From there the news of the Expedition’s return was forwarded to President Thomas Jefferson.
The 2006 nickel depicts a portrait of Thomas Jefferson completed during 1800. The cursive “Liberty” inscription, which debuted on the 2005 nickels, is again presented in Jefferson’s own handwriting.
The reverse side shows the facets of the dome of Monticello that have been restored. The balconies of the building have been reworked and relief has been restored to the detail around the door and windows.
Come, exchange your quarter for five nickels and celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the successful return of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site is located ½ mile north of Stanton on County Road 37. For more information, call the park at 701-745-3300.
