Caverns Hosts Basics of Cave Photography

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

National Park News

Due to their deep shadows and contrasty nature, caves can be some of the most challenging subjects for photographers. Yet, done well, cave images can be some of the most rewarding and spectacularly beautiful pictures a photographer will ever create.

If you are interested in learning basic techniques to successfully take photographs in caves, the National Park Service and the Carlsbad Caverns–Guadalupe Mountains Association invite you to join photographer Peter Jones on July 22, for Basics of Cave Photography.

This one-day workshop will join an extended, three-day class to discuss photographer safety, protection of cave resource, lighting, accessories, and basic techniques. The group will then enter the cave and practice these techniques along the Natural Entrance Route and in the Big Room of Carlsbad Cavern. Lunch will be eaten in the underground rest area.

All participants must register in advance as space is limited. A digital or film camera that has a manual mode is required. You will also need a tripod and a flash unit (built-in or attachable.) A cable release is suggested.

For more information or to register, please contact the Carlsbad Caverns–Guadalupe Mountains Association at 505.785.2486 or via e-mail at hsingleton@ccgma.org.
