Park Superintendent Restricts Open Fires

Joshua Tree National Park

National Park News

Superintendent Curt Sauer announced that, until further notice, no charcoal or wood fires will be allowed anywhere within Joshua Tree National Park. Propane and gas camping stoves may still be used. This action was taken because the current fire hazard in the park is extreme due to the abundance of dry grasses and other vegetation.

With the approach of the 4th of July holiday weekend, the public is reminded that the possession and use of fireworks in national parks is prohibited. Desert residents and park visitors are encouraged to be especially careful with their use of fire, cigarettes, and anything that can produce a flame or sparks.

Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the night skies and view stars, planets, and meteors that are visible on clear desert nights.
