Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

In addition to our daily schedule of Ranger guided walks and talks, we will be offering the following special hikes in July. Contact the Craters Visitor Center to sign up for these events at (208)527-3257.

July 1- Wilderness Hike: 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., 8 miles/ Go Wild… Explore the first designated wilderness area in the National Park System with a hike on the Wilderness Trail out to Little Prairie Waterhole. Meet at the Tree Molds parking lot.

July 8- Full Moon Hike: 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., 3-4 miles/ Howl at the Moon… Explore Craters of the Moon Wilderness by the light of the full moon. Learn about our lunar connections to this unearthly landscape. Meet at the Tree Molds parking lot.

July 15 – Tree Molds Wild Hike: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., 3.5 miles/ View fossils of ancient trees preserved in lava… Explore the rugged wilderness of Craters of the Moon on a hike to the tree molds area and across a lava flow. Meet at the Tree Molds parking lot.

July 22 - North Crater Wild Hike: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 3 miles/ Climb a volcano… Climb to the summit of North Crater and explore the natural history of this young volcano. Meet at the Visitor Center.

July 29 – Geology Hike: 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., 3 miles/ Why go all the way to Hawaii?... Learn about the geology of Craters of the Moon by attending a short presentation at the Visitor Center followed by observation of features in the field.
