Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, in partnership with The Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation will offer an exciting first ever nine-day Summer Leadership Institute for students grade five through ten. The program will be held at the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site facilities at 600 North Second Street and will run July 5th through July 15th from 9:00 am to 4:30 PM. The only charge is $25.00 to cover the cost of materials.
This program is designed to help students recognize Maggie L. Walker’s legacy of leadership and to develop the student’s leadership skills by studying the standards of courage, compassion and perseverance that were the hallmarks of Mrs. Walker.
The Institute consists of sessions that will focus on aspects of business, finance and publishing that were essential to Maggie Walker’s success. Diverse community and business leaders will visit the Institute and share their remarkable stories with the students. These visits will be followed up by special activities that include writing projects, understanding personal finances through banking, credit cards, and loans, and various methods for starting a business.
Leading the institute will be National Park Service Ranger Monamma AL-Ghuiyy and Faithe Mickens, President of the Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation, and grand daughter-in-law of Maggie Walker. Both are education professionals who dreamed of creating an institute to help students become successful leaders and role models. Through the Institute they also hope to provide students with an understanding of savings and checking accounts, interest rates, and business loans to help guide them in making sound financial decisions throughout their lives.
The institute is limited to only 20 individuals, so interested parents are urged to contact Ms. AL-Ghuiyy to reserve a slot as soon as possible. She can be reached at 804-771-2017 X21.
