Special Musical Boat Rides Available on the C&O Canal in Georgetown Saturdays in July

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

National Park News

Have a foot-stomping, hand-clapping good time on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park during the special musical mule-drawn boat rides on Saturdays in July during the 4:30 p.m. canal boat trips in Georgetown. Join in the sing-along tunes of familiar traditional 1800s music and learn how to play an instrument. The one-hour trips originate from and return to the Georgetown Visitor Center at 1057 Thomas Jefferson St., NW.

On each one-hour trip, passengers will travel through a lift lock which raises the boat eight feet from one canal level to the next, in the same manner as they operated 150 years ago. The mule-drawn canal boat rides provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of a bygone era. Passengers are encouraged to visit with the mules that pull the boat.

Interpretive canal boat rides are available from July 1 to August 31, on Wednesdays through Fridays at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 3 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m., 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m. From September 1 to October 29, boat rides are available Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m., 1:30 and 3 p.m. Tickets cost $8 per adult, $6 per senior citizen (ages 62+), and $5 per child (ages 4-14).

Reservations are only taken for groups of 10 or more. There is on-street meter parking available in Georgetown, as well as a parking garage, located in the Foundry Building on 30th Street, between M and K Streets, next to the C&O Canal. For additional information and to confirm dates and times, please contact the Georgetown Visitor Center at 202-653-5190.
