Rangers at Knife River Indian Villages will present several interpretive programs during the weekend of June 17 and June 18, 2006.
Saturday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m. MDT, accompany Ranger Dakota Goodhouse on a walk to the Lower Hidatsa Village site where he will present “Horses of Mass Destruction.” The discussion during the walk will touch on the appearance of the horse on the Great Plains and its effect on hunting, warfare and the cultures of Native Peoples. At 1:30 p.m. MDT, Ranger Ella Mathisen will present, “The Venerable Bison” at the picnic shelter. She will discuss the buffalo as a source of food, clothing, tools and shelter for the Native American people.
Sunday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m. MDT, join Ranger Ella Mathisen on a walk to the Lower Hidatsa Village Site and learn about the Hidatsa culture. At 1:30 p.m. MDT, join SCA Megan Rooth for “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Bird watching, but Were Too Afraid to Ask.” Come learn some simple tips and strategies on how to identify birds, and then test your skills on a short walk in the park.
All programs are free. The visitor center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. MDT daily. Visitors to the park may watch a 15-minute orientation film, see the reconstructed, fully furnished earthlodge, the museum and walk the trail to the Village Sites. Programs are presented on the hour in the earthlodge from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.
