The Bluegrass Sound of Cumberland Gap Connections at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

National Park News

“Washed my hands in the muddy water, washed my hands but they didn’t come clean. Tried to do what my Daddy told me, but I must have washed my hands in a muddy stream.”

The soulful sound of bluegrass music has been part of the Appalachian culture for over seventy years. Life’s tragedies, misfortune, heartbreak and sometimes amusing events surface in the distinct style of bluegrass music. Deeply rooted in folk music, the songs have philosophical meanings with a riveting beat.

On Saturday June 24, 2006, join park rangers in welcoming the bluegrass band Cumberland Gap Connections. Mixing old standard harmony vocals with new techniques, this highly energetic bluegrass band has a style and sound all its own. The band has been together approximately three years and hails from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. “This group will take the world by storm,” explains Park Ranger Matthew Graham. “The enthusiasm, coupled with extraordinary talent, creates energy that will catapult the group to prominence.”

The National Park Service and Eastern National, a non-profit park partner, will sponsor this free program. The program begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Wilderness Road Campground Amphitheater at the end of loop C located two miles east of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee on Virginia Highway 58. In case of rain, meet at the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park visitor center. For information on this and other ranger programs, contact park staff at 606-248-2817, extension 1075.
