C&O Canal Offers Summer Programs in Western Maryland

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park will offer several summer programs in western Maryland including Sharpsburg, Williamsport, Hancock, and Cumberland.

The Hancock Visitor Center, located at 326 East Main Street in Hancock, is open until Sunday, September 17. The hours of operation are Fridays through Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The visitor center is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Ferry Hill Mansion, located at 16500 Shepherdstown Pike, Sharpsburg, will open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Saturday, June 17 through Sunday, September 3. Ferry Hill is rich in history with links to the Potomac River, the C&O Canal, and the Civil War period. For more information, please call the Williamsport Visitor Center at 301-582-0813.

In Williamsport, lock demonstrations at Lock 44 are held on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 3 p.m. through Sunday, September 3. The lock is located just downstream from the Williamsport Visitor Center, 205 W. Potomac Street. Learn about “locking through” and the locktender’s life. The Williamsport Visitor Center is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The visitor center is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. A ranger program, in cooperation with the Friends of Shepherdstown Riverfront, will begin on the grounds of the Mecklenburg Tobacco Warehouse in Shepherdstown, W.Va., on Saturday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m. The program will start with a brief history of the warehouse and area. Participants will then take a free trolley ride a short distance to Lock 38 in Sharpsburg, Md., to complete the program. The trolley will return riders to the Mecklenburg Tobacco Warehouse after the program. To reach the warehouse from Sharpsburg, take MD Route 34 West into Shepherdstown and turn left at German Street. Three historic lockhouses are currently open to the public on weekends until the fall. Members of the Lander Community Association will open Lockhouse 29 at Lander on Saturdays only from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Saturday, October 14. Lander Lockhouse is located off Lander Road, accessible from MD Route 464 east of Brunswick. Lockhouse 70 at Oldtown is open Saturdays and Sundays only through Sunday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lockhouse 70 is located off MD Route 51, 15 miles south of Cumberland. Members of the C&O Canal Association will open Lockhouse 75 at North Branch on Saturdays and Sundays only from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lockhouse will close for the season on Labor Day, Monday, September 4 at 4 p.m. Lockhouse 75 is located off MD Route 51, five miles south of Cumberland.

Guided walks through the Paw Paw Tunnel are currently offered on Saturdays only from 2 to 3 p.m. through Saturday, September 2. Visitors should meet the park ranger at the tunnel entrance located one-half mile from the parking area. Bring a flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes. The Paw Paw Tunnel is 3,118 feet long, making it the largest structure along the length of the C&O Canal. The tunnel is 25 miles south of Cumberland, off MD Route 51.

The newly rewatered terminus basin in Cumberland is the site for park ranger guided walks and talks on Sundays only from 3:15 to 4 p.m. through Sunday, September 3. The Cumberland Visitor Center is located on the first floor in the Western Maryland Railway Station, 13 Canal Street.
