(FLAT ROCK, NC)--Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will present a historic walking tour on Sunday June 11th at 1:00 p.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. Tours will begin at the main house and last approximately one hour. Christopher Memminger, a lawyer from Charleston and the first Secretary the Confederate Treasury, built the estate in 1838, and called it “Rock Hill.” The tour will discuss the history of the estate during the original owner’s time, long before the Sandburg’s moved to Flat Rock in 1945. Highlights of the tour will include a discussion of the formal gardens, the fountain in front of the house during that era, and the rifle slits in the lower level wall that were used to protect the family from deserters of the civil war. The original use of the estate was as a summer home and several of the over 50 historic buildings will be visited during the tour. The tour is free and open to the public.
