(Calumet, MI) Keweenaw National Historical Park (NHP) and the Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission announced today that they are seeking applications from sites throughout the Copper Country to partner with the park in providing interpretation and preservation of the copper story on the Keweenaw. The Keweenaw Heritage Sites program will include sites across the Keweenaw Peninsula region that have significant cultural, historical, or natural resources related to the story of copperâs influence on the area. Eligible sites should be located in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, or Ontonagon counties.
The park, established on October 27, 1992, is dedicated to preserving the nationally significant historical and cultural sites, structures, and districts of the Keweenaw for the education, benefit, and inspiration of present and future generations. It is likewise charged with interpreting the historic synergism between the geological, aboriginal, sociological, cultural, technological, and corporate forces that relate the story of copper on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
For the past ten years the park has had an informal relationship with âCooperating Sites,â which were park partners that assisted by providing visitor services. Those seventeen sites assisted the park with its interpretive charge during its formative years, and performed an admirable service to the region and the country in doing so. The park and its Advisory Commission are very appreciative of the service performed by those seventeen sites. The Cooperating Sites also helped lay the foundation upon which the new Keweenaw Heritage Sites program is based.
Applications for the Keweenaw Heritage Sites program will be sought between June 1 and August 1, 2006. Applications must be received by close of business on August 1. A selection committee composed of three (3) commissioners and two (2) park staff will review the applications and make recommendations to the Advisory Commission, with final designation being conferred by the park superintendent. Public announcement of the Keweenaw Heritage Sites is scheduled for the Advisory Commissionâs regular quarterly meeting in January, 2007.
Application packets include the criteria for designation, application forms, and the current Keweenaw Heritage Site Standards of operation. The application will provide the park and the Advisory Commission with the information necessary to make a determination of eligibility and provide a baseline for meeting future assistance needs of the candidate site. A primary focus of park staff and the Advisory Commission is to provide technical and financial assistance to park partners both within and outside of park boundaries.
