Crystal Creek Road Closed for Repairs

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

National Park News

Superintendent Jim Milestone has announced plans to repair approximately six miles of Crystal Creek Road in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. This project will restore the unpaved portion of the road from the Crystal Creek Boys Camp to Coggins Park Campground. The road is constructed out of decomposed granite and is susceptible to washouts causing extreme erosion during winter rains. The purpose of the project is to restore this old logging road and reduce the amount of erosion and therefore sediment flow into the creek and Whiskeytown Lake.

The work will include replacing several culverts that are presently inoperable, outsloping the road to improve drainage, and then resurfacing it. The road has been closed for the winter and will remain closed until the end of this project, which is scheduled for completion at the end of the summer in 2007. Work will begin on the culverts and outsloping in June this year and continue through the fall. Next summer, gravel will be applied to the road and it should be ready to reopen in late summer. There is an alternate route to Coggins Park Campground that can be accessed by taking County Line Road off Highway 299 at Buckhorn Summit.
