Prescribed Fire Cancelled
(Pipestone, MN.) Superintendent Jim LaRock announced the Monument will not be conducting its annual prescribed fire this spring. The unusually wet weather and consistent north winds are to blame. The Monument’s prescriptive burn policy does not allow burning with a north wind to prevent smoke from blowing into the city of Pipestone.
A prescribed fire is planned for this coming fall if conditions are favorable. The Monument’s goal is to burn one-third of its natural areas each year to reduce hazardous fuels that could lead to wildfires and to promote the health of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Prescribed fire has been used at the Monument since 1972 and was one of the first prairie parks to engage its use.
