Brown v. Board of Education NHS welcomed over 600 students from Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet School to participate in the schools’ annual “Field Day” celebration. The event allowed the children to practice the skills learned during the school year in a “play” structured format. Superintendent Dennis Vasquez wants the historic playground to be used the way it had been thirty-one years ago when the Monroe Elementary school closed due to declining enrollment. Vasquez stated, “We want the children of Williams Magnet School and the neighborhood to remember this as a place where they could have fun, as well as a place to learn.” On the playground, the children played tug-of-war, spoon racing, sponge racing, and they played with jacks and created sidewalk art. Organizers of the “Field Day” hope the children will transfer the game ideas to their neighborhood and enjoy an active, moving summer. The goal is to make children physically active at school and home.
