(FLAT ROCK, NC)—On Monday, May 15th, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will continue efforts to control the spread of invasive exotic plants. The National Park Service Southeast Exotic Plant Management Team will visit the park to assist with activities to remove invasive non-native plants from the park’s pastures and woodlands. Invasive species disrupt natural ecosystems and destroy critical habitat required for the long-term survival of native species. Some of the exotic weeds to be treated are Chinese privet, Japanese honeysuckle, English ivy, Japanese spiraea, Oriental bittersweet, Japanese wisteria and multiflora rose. The work will involve a combination of activities including hand cutting and pulling, and herbicide application.
The exotic plant management team is expected to work in the park through the week. All areas of the park will remain open to visitation. For additional information, you may contact the park forestry technician at 828-693-4178.
