On May 7th, the park hosted the 19th annual St. Croix “Ironman 70.3” competition. Eight hundred entrants from as far away as Australia vied for 30 spots in the World Ironman Championships in Florida later this year. The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. The men’s winner was Craig Alexander of Australia in 4:07:33; the women’s winner was Mirinda Carfrae, also of Australia, in 4:30:13. A sprint triathlon event was also conducted at the same time. All events began and concluded on the grounds of historic Fort Christiansvaern adjacent to Christiansted Harbor. Ironman week continues to be a huge economic benefit for the island.
