Padre Island National Seashore Hosts 3rd Annual National Parks America Tour

Padre Island National Seashore

National Park News

(Corpus Christi, Texas)- Superintendent Colin Campbell invites volunteers of all ages who want to revitalize one of America’s National Parks to participate in the National Parks America Tour event on Saturday, May 6, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. It is the third of such events hosted by Padre Island National Seashore. Registration and breakfast will occur at 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m., the beach clean-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at approximately 12:00 noon. A free picnic lunch will follow.

In cooperation with Unilever, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the National Park Foundation, and Take Pride in America, the National Parks America Tour will engage several organizations in the community, including but not limited to the local Boys & Girls Club kids, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, local high school students, Wal-Mart Associates and families in a beach clean-up project. Volunteers will receive free a t-shirt and breakfast compliments of program sponsors: Unilever and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The National Parks America Tour will salute America’s Best—its volunteers—at the Great American Picnic after the work activities. The National Parks America Tour is a volunteer-driven initiative designed to provide National Parks with manpower resources to complete important projects and engage communities in the National Park experience and is projected to donate more than 100,000 volunteer manpower hours to the National Park Service.

Unilever has a longstanding commitment to Padre Island National Seashore. The Park has participated in the National Parks America Tour since 2004, and was also the recipient of a Unilever Discretionary Grant aimed to establish a second nesting colony for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle on the beaches of Padre Island National Seashore.

Volunteers wanting to participate should meet at Padre Island National Seashore’s Malaquite Beach Visitor Center. Entrance fees for volunteers will be waived; however, they are asked to stop at the entrance station before going to the event location. Interested groups and individuals should call Dimitra Guerrero at 361-949-8173, extension 229 for more information or questions.

The National Seashore is located southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas. Visitors to Corpus Christi should head East through the city on South Padre Island Drive (Highway 358). After crossing the JFK Causeway and the bridge onto Padre Island, continue about 10 miles south on Park Road 22.
