Portions of Loop Road to be Closed for Repairs

Big Cypress National Preserve

National Park News

The National Park Service plans to begin replacement of damaged culverts along the Loop Road that fall within its jurisdiction. The work calls for the replacement of seven culverts that have collapsed over time. The replacement of the culverts will improve water flow through the area, and reduce the amount of flooding over the roadway during the summer months.

The work will require that portions of the roadway be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning May 10 through May 23, 2006. The work will take place during the weekdays (Monday through Thursday) only, and the road will be open to all through traffic after 4:30 p.m. daily, and during the weekend (Friday through Saturday.)

All road work will take place near, or west of the Loop Road Educational Center. Signs will be posted and clear turnaround sights will be identified. In case of a life-threatening emergency, work will cease and the road can be promptly filled to allow for emergency vehicle traffic. All residents will be able to access their properties, but will have to plan in advance which entrance of the Loop Road they should use, depending on construction.

If you have any questions or concerns related to the project, please contact John Javor, Chief of Maintenance at (239) 695-1130.
