Drought conditions and warm temperatures are combining to create an increase in the fire danger levels at Chiricahua National Monument. Effective immediately the following fire restrictions will be implemented:
1) No candles or wood fires are permitted in the Bonita Creek Campground. Visitors may use charcoal, and gas or propane stoves at the campground. Only gas or propane stoves are permitted at the Bonita and Faraway Ranch Picnic Areas. Please use caution.
2) Smoking is permitted only in closed vehicles. Dispose of butts in your ashtray. There is no smoking on or off the trails, or at the Faraway Ranch Historic District.
?This winter there have been only two small, measurable snow falls at Chiricahua National Monument,? stated Superintendent Alan Whalon. ?We want people to have an enjoyable visit while protecting the natural and cultural resources.? The timing of the restrictions coincides with those being implemented by the USDA Forest Service -Coronado National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, and Arizona State Lands.
