North Unit To Have Wilderness Hikes

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

National Park News

Outdoor activities are being offered at the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park this spring. The public is invited to join Park Ranger John Heiser while exploring North Dakota?s largest wilderness area. In addition to discussions about the age-old relationship between humanity and wild country, the group will enjoy the beauty of spring wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.

Meet John at the North Unit Visitor Center, located 15 miles south of Watford City, at 12:00 p.m. Central time every other Sunday throughout the spring. The hikes will be offered: April 9 and 23; and May 7 and 21. Starting Memorial Day weekend, hikes will be offered each Sunday through September.

These afternoon adventures will take approximately three to five hours. The routes taken will traverse backcountry wildlife trails so the hikes may be moderately strenuous at times. Dress appropriately for wandering through the wilderness and observing badlands natural history. Sturdy boots are recommended. Bring water, lunch, insect repellant, field guides and binoculars.

For additional information (including severe weather postponements), call the North Unit Visitor Center at 701-842-2333 or John at 701-863-6987.
