Topeka, KS ? On Saturday, January 14, Dennis Vasquez, Superintendent of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, was honored at an awards banquet in Topeka, Kansas with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Action Award. The banquet was part of Topeka?s 21st annual weeklong Living the Dream Celebration. The organizers of the celebration, Living the Dream, Inc., honored Vasquez for his contributions in making a positive difference in the community.
Superintendent Vasquez was recognized for his numerous contributions to the community of Topeka, KS in his short time as Superintendent of Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site and for his community volunteer efforts. Some of the contributions cited include his efforts as a board member of the Topeka Convention and Visitors Bureau, establishing a NPS Ranger presence at local schools, and establishing a transportation grant to fund student field trips from the 4 Topeka School Districts. Also, Vasquez was chosen by Governor Kathleen Sebelius as one of 3 delegates to represent Kansas at the U.S. Summit on Cultural and Heritage Tourism in Washington, D.C. Vasquez was among several recipients who were acknowledged for their commitment and dedication to the community.
