Prescribed Burns Planned at Lake Roosevelt for Spring 2006

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area plans to implement three prescribed burns this spring from the beginning of April to mid-May. The areas will include Bradbury, Marcus Island, and Whispering Pines.

The most favorable weather conditions for ignition will be from the beginning of April to mid-May. Ignition is expected to occur from 1-2 days per area. Weather parameters, which include temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, must be met before a prescribed burn can be ignited. Smoke will be seen and smelled in these areas for a few days following ignition. Firefighters will work to put out residual fires and patrol areas for several days following the burn.

The Bradbury area, which is 25 acres, is located adjacent to Highway 25, the Whispering Pines unit, which is located south of the North Lake Roosevelt Resort and adjacent to Hwy 395, is 50 acres, and Marcus Island, located in the Marcus Island Campground just north of the community of Marcus on Hwy 25 is approximately 20 acres.

The primary objective of these prescribed burns is to decrease twigs, brush, dead needles and leaves adjacent to campgrounds reducing the risk of fire spread to neighboring private residences and lands. Resulting benefits will be a reduction in fire hazards, increased available nutrients to trees, plants and grasses, and increased wildflowers, shrubs, and other plants.
