On Sunday, April 2 Richmond National Battlefield Park historian Mike Gorman will lead a walking tour commemorating the 141st Anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln?s 1865 visit to Richmond. This two-hour, two-mile walking tour will meet in Shockoe Slip at the fountain near 13th and Cary streets at 2:00 pm. Parking is available nearby.
Two days after Confederate forces evacuated Richmond, President Abraham Lincoln came to tour the city that had symbolized the rebellion. In front of him lay more than a ruined city. With the war's end at hand, many questions remained. What can be done to end the fighting? What shall be done for the former slaves? How shall the uniting of the divided nation proceed? With those questions in mind, Lincoln came to Richmond not as a triumphant victor, but seeking peace. There is no charge for this program, which will be presented rain or shine. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.
