Richmond National Battlefield Park

National Park News

Cannon firings, special exhibits, programs and music are just a few of the highlights of the 9th Annual Civil War Days at Tredegar Iron Works, Saturday April 1, sponsored by Richmond National Battlefield Park. Living history volunteers, portraying Union and Confederate soldiers and civilians will participate. The event begins at 10:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm, rain or shine. There is no charge for this event and free parking is available in the Tredegar lot.

Special programs include artillery and rifle-firing demonstrations, and talks on Civil War ballooning, medicine and railroads. Rangers and volunteers will provide a variety of walking tours and talks throughout the day, including that of historic Tredegar Iron Works, women?s contributions, the Belle Isle prison camp site and the experience of black and white laborers at Tredegar Iron Works. Young people can earn Junior Ranger badges as they participate in special children?s activities. By talking with the living history volunteers they can learn about life in camp and at home during the Civil War. Musical group Southern Horizon will round out the day, playing music from the era.

The Civil War Visitor Center will host displays by the John B. Cary Model School; Museum of the Confederacy; Pamplin Historical Park; Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church; and the Virginia Aviation Museum.

The weekend events will conclude Sunday, April 2 with a walking tour commemorating President Abraham Lincoln?s 1865 visit to Richmond. This two-hour, two-mile walking tour led by park historian Mike Gorman, will meet in Shockoe Slip at the fountain near 13th and Cary streets at 2:00 pm. Parking is available nearby.
