On Saturday, March 25th, Mojave National Preserve celebrated the grand opening of the recently restored Kelso Depot. Park Superintendent Dennis Schramm, PacificWest Regional Director Jon Jarvis, and California Congressman Jerry Lewis addressed an estimated 700 people gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony. Approximately 1500 people attended the daylong festivities which included music, cowboy poetry and numerous special interpretive activities.
Built in 1924 by the Union Pacific Railroad, the Kelso Depot has been transformed into Mojave National Preserve's principal information center, with museum exhibits, a theater, and bookstore. Several rooms have been historically furnished to recreate their appearance in the 1930s. The Kelso Depot Information Center is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
