Are you a teenager, 15-18 years old? Ever wanted to try your hand at natural resource work in our city's beautiful but endangered coastal sage chaparral habitat? San Diego's hometown National Park, Cabrillo National Monument, is accepting applications for the Summer 2006 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Program. This eight-week program will run from June 21 through August 15, 2006, and the four person crew will work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM. Pay is $6.75 per hour. The only requirement is that you must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old (you can't turn 19 during the course of the program). There is no previous experience necessary - selection is by random drawing.
Typical duties include removal of iceplant, acacia, and other non-native vegetation; installation of erosion control systems; trail maintenance; and restoration of historic structures. This outdoor work is hard and physically demanding, but rewarding: you'll play a critical role in restoring, improving, and preserving wildland areas of Cabrillo National Monument for the native plants and animals that live in the area, and for the enjoyment of future generations that will visit the park. Training and uniforms are provided.
Want to learn more? Contact Terry Scherkenbach at (619) 523-4561 or Marty Lane at (619) 523-4568 with questions or to request an application. The deadline to apply is June 8, 2006 - applications must be received by then in order to be considered. Together, the YCC Program and Cabrillo National Monument make a positive impact on critical habitat of the Point Loma Peninsula - will you be part of the team?
