The $986,000 project will consolidate most of park?s maintenance operations at this location. This major infrastructure upgrade will improve operational efficiency, protect resources, and better accommodate the park?s increasing maintenance needs. The project is also intended to eliminate the use of historic structures to house maintenance operations and to remove non-historic maintenance shops and storage facilities from historic settings and views. Additionally, the upgrade will improve the park?s equipment maintenance operation, provide covered storage for vehicles and machinery and enhance employee safety.
An environmental assessment (EA) was released for a 45-day public comment period in June 2003 in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and NPS Director?s Order 12 (DO-12). The EA described the goals of the project, analyzed the effects of each alternative on the human environment, and solicited public comment on the proposed action. Construction work is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 20, 2006. Petersburg National Battlefield was created in order to commemorate the campaign and siege and defense of Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864 and 1865. The park staff is committed to preserving and protecting the historical, cultural, and natural resources within the park in a manner that will provide interpretation, education, and enjoyment for the visitors.
Questions regarding the rehabilitation work can be addressed to Jerry Helton, Chief of Maintenance at Petersburg National Battlefield. Mr. Helton?s telephone number is (804) 732-6481 ext. 211 and his e-mail address is Jerry_Helton @nps.gov.
