Events for the sixth annual ?A New Beginning? will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2006. The event commemorates the return of spring to the villages and the westward departure of Sakakawea and the Corps of Discovery. All events are open to the public and free of charge. All time are Mountain Daylight Time and events for the day include:
12:00 Noon: Michael Haynes and ?Knife River Spring?. Mr. Haynes will be discussing his painting and the research and consultation her undertook to maintain historical and cultural integrity.
1:00 p.m: ?Native Women as Keepers of Tradition? Join Connie Fox of Mandaree to learn about gardening skills, trade, and clan systems as well as the changing roles of Native American women today.
2:00 p.m: ?Beading Workshop?. Join Alice Traversie of New Town to learn about beading. You will have the opportunity to make either a dream catcher or a necklace. Reservations are recommended for this activity.
Come and join in the commemoration of Sakakawea?s departure. The earthlodge will be furnished and the 15-minute orientation film will be available for viewing throughout the day. Park hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Knife River Indian Villages NHS is located ? mile north of Stanton on County Road 37. On April 7, 2006 the ?Departure From Fort Mandan? will be held at Fort Mandan located in Washburn North Dakota. Readings from the journals and the unveiling of a new Michael Haynes print will be among the activities. Go the website www.fortmandan.com for more information.
