SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 2006
The special evening of "lantern lit" walking tours of Fort Davis National Historic Site will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2006. This special once-a-year event will take visitors back in time to when Fort Davis was an active military post as they are guided to various buildings and locations around the fort.
A highlight this year will be visiting the post hospital, which is currently undergoing interior restoration. Last summer, during a preservation field school, work began in earnest in the administrative section. Three historically accurate windows and flooring were installed and plaster was conserved. This portion of the building will re-open in early March with new exhibits. Restoration work on the structure is continuing and another field school is planned this summer.
For those who have not seen the work at the hospital, the evening tours on March 25th offer the perfect opportunity. Although there is no fee for the tours, donations will be accepted. The donated funds will be used for the on-going hospital restoration project as a match for the Save America's Treasures grant the park received. Every dollar donated will be doubled, which in turn will allow the project to continue. When finished the north ward and two rooms in the administrative wing will be restored.
The tours will begin at 6:10 p.m. and each tour will last approximately one hour. Because only a limited number of visitors can be accomodated on each tour, reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling Fort Davis NHS at (432) 426-3224, ext. 20 after March 6th.
