New Bryce Canyon Stamp To Be Issued

Bryce Canyon National Park

National Park News

The National Park Service and the US Postal Service will unveil the new Bryce Canyon postage stamp in a ceremony at 10 a.m. this Friday at the Bryce Canyon National Park Visitor Center.  A special postmark, free with the purchase of a first class stamp, will be available at the event.

In 2005, over 1,500,000 visitors came from all over the world to see the outstanding views of the Bryce Amphitheater. The most photographed views are from Bryce Point, Sunrise Point, Sunset Point and Inspiration Point. The photograph on the stamp was taken from Inspiration Point, one of the recommended spots for seeing the sunrise or sunset. It is of Bryce Amphitheater, where erosion shaped the landscape into countless whimsical spires known as hoodoos.

The photograph, taken by Tom Till of Moab, Utah, will soon appear on a U.S. postage stamp that will reach a national and international audience. The new 63-cent Bryce Canyon stamp is the one-ounce rate for letters destined for Mexico and Canada, and the two-ounce rate for domestic mail. The stamp will debut at Post Offices nationwide beginning Friday, February 24th.

The new stamp is one of three being released that day as part of the scenic American landscapes series. The other two are of Great Smoky Mountains (75-cent international postcard rate) and Yosemite Valley (84-cent international letter rate for countries other than Canada and Mexico).

Stamp collectors who seek out first day postmarks of new issue stamps may also obtain this postmark by mail. Simply address an envelope to yourself, ensure proper first-class postage is affixed, put the envelope inside a larger envelope and mail t Bryce Canyon Postmark, Postmaster, Panguitch Post Office, 65 N. 100 W., Panguitch UT 84759-9998.  All requests must be postmarked no later than March 25th.

The Bryce Canyon Natural History Association is a partner in sponsoring this event. This organization will have collectables available for sale in the Bryce Canyon National Park Visitor Center after the event. For more information, call 435-834-4600 or visit the website at www.brycecanyon.org.
