16th Annual Season of Tradition

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

In recognition of Arizona Archeology Month, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is hosting its annual Season of Tradition. Various cultural demonstrators from the Tohono O?odham nation are invited to the monument each weekend in March.

The first weekend, March 4th and 5th, will focus on the traditional skills of pottery, basketry and native plant use. The weekend of March 11th & 12th will focus on traditional dry land farming techniques and O?odham Storytelling. Demonstrators are scheduled to begin at 10:00 am each Saturday and Sunday and will be set up until 4:00 pm. In addition to sharing their craft, demonstrators will have examples of their wares for visitors to view and purchase. Also scheduled is a special presentation by Hia Ced tribal elder Lorraine Eiler on Sunday March 12 at 1:00. Another special program will be presented by staff archaeologist Joe Toumey on Saturday March 18 at 1:00. All demonstrations are free will take place at the Kris Eggle Visitor Center, located 35 miles south of Ajo, just off Highway 85.
