Winners of 2006 Washington's Birthday Art Contest Announced

FARMINGTON, PA: The National Park Service will honor the winners of the Fort Necessity Washington's Birthday Art Contest with award ceremonies Saturday, February 25. Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades of local elementary schools were challenged to artistically depict an event in George Washington's life. Judges chose the winners from 903 student entries based on artistic merit and historical accuracy.

The ceremony begins at 1:00p.m. Students will receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond for first prize, a $25.00 gift certificate to the Fort Necessity Bookstore for second prize, or a George Washington Medallion for third prize. Honorable mention and special merit entries earned a Fort Necessity lapel pin. Awards will be presented to:

Fourth Grade - Washington in Fayette Category: First Prize: Summer Miller, Perry Elementary, Perryopolis; Second Prize: Caitlyn Brown, Frazier Central Elementary, Perryopolis; Third Prize: Dennis Barth, Spring Valley School, Farmington; Honorable Mention: Jessica Mansberry, Frazier Central Elementary; Jake Koltiska, Perry Elementary.

Fourth Grade - Life of Washington Category: First Prize: Branden Kippel, Perry Elementary; Second Prize: Sarah Fiano, Conn-Area Catholic, Connellsville; Third Prize: Megan Campbell, Frazier Central Elementary; Honorable Mention: Victoria Thomas, Frazier Central Elementary; Meeghan Brant, St. John the Evangelist, Uniontown; Morgan Martin, Wharton Elementary, Farmington.

Fourth Grade - Special Merit Awards: Washington's Portrait: Hunter Morris, Perry Elementary; Mary Haemmerle, Home School, Carroll, Ohio; Fort Necessity: William Mitchell, Wharton Elementary.

Fifth Grade - Washington in Fayette Category: First Prize: Mark Frederick, Altoona Central Catholic Middle School, Altoona; Second Prize: Sarah Elias, St. John the Evangelist; Third Prize: John VanDivner, Perry Elementary; Honorable Mention: Leah Muccioli, Perry Elementary; Cory Krall, Perry Elementary; Martin Boller, Spring Valley School, Farmington.

Fifth Grade - Life of Washington Category: First Prize: Bronwen Barron, Spring Valley School; Second Prize: Ryan Robson, Conn-Area Catholic; Third Prize: Tanner Murt, Frazier Central Elementary; Honorable Mention: Sarah Mc Gee, Perry Elementary; Emily Kovacic, St. John the Evangelist, Uniontown.

All entries will be on display at the Fort Necessity visitor center February 24 through March 3, 2006. Following the award ceremony at 2:30, Dr. Jeffery Schwartz, who directed a collaboration to reconstruct George Washington at 3 different ages for Mount Vernon, will present ?Putting a Face on the First President?, A highly visual program about the project.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located 11 miles east of Uniontown on U.S. Route 40, The National Road.
