President?s Day Weekend is for the Birds! Join the Great Backyard Bird Count!
Come join us February 17-20, 2006; for four days of bird watching and fun at Pipestone National Monument! The Great Backyard Bird Count is a nationwide event that takes place every year to help document the changing patterns of birds in winter.
There is no registration and all levels of birdwatchers are welcome! Come to Pipestone National Monument at anytime and be ready to keep an eye out for birds. You can spend as little as 15 minutes or as much time as you would like; come one day or all four days! All you have to do is bring a pen (a pair of binoculars if you have some), and look at the birds. While observing our winged friends, write down what kinds you see and how many there are in a group (don?t worry?you don?t need to identify every kind of bird?just count the ones you can).
Not only will you have fun, enjoying birding and the outdoors, but you will be participating in providing scientific data for the National Audubon Society and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. After the event you can submit your results on-line at http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc, and contribute to the better understanding of our birds.
For more information, bird descriptions, tips for identifying birds, and a copy of the checklist; you can go on-line to http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc or contact Pipestone National Monument for more information, phone (507) 825-5464, Ext 14.
