Events During Black History Month & Women?s History Month

February and March 2006

Tuesday, February 14: Frederick Douglass? Birthday Celebration. 10:00 a.m. Join in the celebration of Frederick Douglass? 188th birthday with a program commemorating his life and legacy. Dr. Greg Carr, Assistant Professor of Afro-American Studies at Howard University, will speak about Douglass? legacy while local school choirs provide musical selections, and the winners of the site?s annual oratorical contest make presentations. Saturday, February 25: In Douglass? Shoes. 11:00 a.m. A slave shirt, a top hat, a walking stick?Get a glimpse of the world of Frederick Douglass by exploring objects that he used in everyday life. This is an interactive program for children ages six and up. Participants will be able to touch reproductions of items Frederick Douglass used in his everyday life while learning about his unique journey from slave to a leading American orator. Visitor Center Auditorium. Seating is limited. Reservations are required for groups of five or more. (202) 426-5961.

Saturday, March 4: Defining the Care in Caretaker. 1:00 p.m. Celebrate Women?s History Month by learning about the remarkable efforts of the women of the Frederick Douglass Memorial & Historical Association as they preserved the Douglass Home between 1903 and 1962. Visitor Center Auditorium. Seating is limited. (202) 426-5961.

Ongoing: Tour Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. Although all of the artifacts within the Frederick Douglass Home are in storage due to ongoing repair work, park rangers are still leading tours. View large format images of the furnished rooms, as well as historic photographs of the Douglass home, and learn about the progression of changes in the preservation of the home. The cost for a tour is $2.00 per person.
