2006 American History Essay Contest Deadline is February 8

Gettysburg National Military Park and the Adams County Arts Council will jointly observe Black History Month (February 2006) by co-sponsoring the American History Essay Contest. The theme for this year?s event is ?Music and Movements.? Students are asked to analyze the function of music during the Civil Rights Movement and discuss music?s role in public discourse today. All high schools in Adams County are invited to participate, and any high school student may submit an essay. A panel of writers and educators will select finalists and savings bonds in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners. Winning essays will be displayed on Gettysburg National Military Park?s website ( www.nps.gov/gett ), and winners will also receive two complimentary admissions to the 2006 Gettysburg National Military Park Seminar and a related book. On February 22, at 7:00 p.m., Gettysburg National Military Park and the Adams County Arts Council will present a public performance of South African Instrument maker and world musician, Mogauwane Mahloele. At this performance, the first place winner of the 2006 American History Essay Contest will be asked to read his or her essay. Essays are due February 8, 2006.
