National Park Service Releases Dayton Aviation Heritage Draft General Management Plan Amendment and Announces Public Meetings

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

National Park News

Copies of the Draft Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park General Management Plan Amendment and Environmental Impact Statement are now available from the Park Headquarters in Dayton. This plan responds to the 2000 park boundary change, the completion of many construction and rehabilitation initiatives proposed in the park?s original General Management Plan (1997), and heightened security issues and concerns associated with the Huffman Prairie Flying Field unit, which have resulted from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
?Dayton Aviation Heritage is a complex urban national park involving many partnerships,? commented Park Superintendent Lawrence Blake. ?The plan reaffirms the mission, purpose, and significance of the park, while also providing important direction for the future.?
The plan presents three alternatives for managing the park, including a preferred alternative wherein the National Park Service would have a primary goal to increase regional involvement, particularly in the interpretation, education, and outreach aspects of the park. The plan also proposes several new developments, including a new public entrance for the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and a maintenance facility for the park and its partners. The plan does not propose any boundary changes.
Two open houses will be held in conjunction with the public review of this document on February 22, at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center at Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, 16 South Williams, Dayton, Ohio. The first open house will run from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and the second open house will run from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Copies of the draft general management plan amendment can be obtained by calling Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP headquarters, (937) 225-7705, or by writing the Superintendent, Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP, P.O. Box 9280, Dayton, Ohio 45409.
The Dayton Library, main branch, 215 E 3rd St, Dayton, OH 45402 (937) 227-9500 has two copies available for review at the reference desk, lower level.
The document is also posted on the internet and can be reviewed and/or downloaded at http://www.nps.gov/daav and clicking the Management Documents link or at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/publicHome.cfm.
Comments can be provided via the internet at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/publicHome.cfm, by mail, or by attending the open house and submitting comments. Additional information on how to comment can be found in the plan. Public review of the plan continues until March 10, 2006.
