Photography Exhibit?Birds of Antietam National Battlefield

Antietam National Battlefield

National Park News

Beginning December 3, 2005 and continuing through mid-February 2006, Antietam National Battlefield will host a photography exhibit in the Visitor Center entitled ?The Birds of Antietam? by former National Geographic photographer Don Cooper.
Don worked as a wildlife photographer for the National Geographic Society from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. Although his work took him to places such as Iceland and Alaska, Don?s area of special focus was the Appalachian Mountains.
Don has lived in Sharpsburg, MD for the past 32 years and has photographed the battlefield during that span. Since his retirement, Don has served as a volunteer for the park?s Division of Natural Resources, adding photographic documentation to the battlefield?s plant and animal resource files.
In Don?s own words, ?The battlefield is a treasure trove for a wildlife photographer. I have just scratched the surface of what the battlefield holds; it is truly an amazing area.? On Wednesday, December 28, 2005, Don will be at the exhibit from 10:00 am until noon to answer questions regarding his photographs.
The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm. For further information, please contact Debbie Cohen at 301-432-2243 ext.13 or Debbie_Cohen@nps.gov.
