Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th US president, has just completed a project to translate and publish its site brochure into six foreign languages. The first two were Russian and Japanese, selected to mark the centennial of the Treaty of Portsmouth, brokered by Theodore Roosevelt to end the Russo-Japanese War. TR was the first American and only sitting president to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the conflict. Chief of Interpretation, Charles Markis, contracted Harald Hille, a United Nations translator, to arrange for producing the text and editing the copy of the site brochure. “The site has frequent Russian and Japanese speaking visitors and we have long wanted to produce these publications. Sensitive to the fact that such translations provide challenges far beyond regular scope of everyday language, (Rough Riders, Bullmoose, Sagamore Hill, for example), we wanted to make sure that our translations would be reflective of the highest standard of language we used a translator familiar with such issues and sought the best we could find,” Markis stated. “We are pleased that we have been able to create these publications for our Russian and Japanese speaking visitors to mark the centennial of this event,” he concluded. These translations have proved to be invaluable for helping people who do not speak English understand the significance of Sagamore Hill and Theodore Roosevelt. The success of Russian and Japanese translations prompted staff to investigate further translations. Observations regarding the visiting public by interpretive staff pointed to the obvious need for Spanish since many of the region’s residents are Hispanic. Other pockets of Italian, French, and German neighborhoods bring frequent visitors speaking these languages and demonstrating need for information for these people. Once again, we turned to Harald Hille for expert translators for the four additional languages who provided excellent and speedy work so that all the translations, printing and editing were completed in a timely fashion. The translation project has produced a total of six foreign language brochures for visitors to Sagamore Hill.
