Career Day Held In Park For Local Students

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

National Park News

On September 3rd, San Antonio Missions and the National Organization for Mexican American Rights (NOMAR) hosted almost 200 local students from area high schools and introduced them to National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Geological Survey careers.

The event at Mission San Jose started with a tour of the San Jose church, which is still an active Catholic parish.

Following the tour the students rotated through three different venues – Fish and Wildlife presented career opportunities within their agency; the  NPS and Geological Survey presented a total of 10 different career exhibits, ranging from administration to resource and visitor protection that the students visited based on their interests; and, finally, David Vela, the associate director for workforce, relevancy and inclusion in Washington, and Mardi Arce, the park’s superintendent, spoke to the students about the  importance of the national park in their own "back yard".

Following this career immersion experience, the students attended the annual NOMAR leadership training seminar.
