The Office of Legislative and Congressional Affairs puts out weekly reports on hearings, new legislation and other activities on the Hill. This report covers the week ending on Friday, July 5th.

New Bills Introduced     

The following bills of interest to the NPS were introduced:

  • S. 1237 (Wyden, D-OR, by request), a bill to improve the administration of programs in the insular areas, and for other purposes.
  • H.R. 2595 (Israel, D-NY-3), to help ensure that all items offered for sale in any gift shop of the National Park Service or of the National Archives and Records Administration are produced in the United States, and for other purposes.

Upcoming Committee Activity

On July 9th, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation (Bishop) will hold an oversight hearing on the “Public Impact of Closing Amenities at Yosemite National Park.” The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 am in 1324 Longworth. The Department’s witness will be Director Jon Jarvis.

On July 11th, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (Wyden) will hold a hearing on S. 1237 (Wyden, D-OR), a bill to improve the administration of programs in the insular areas, and for other purposes. Section 10 of the bill would establish the Castle Nugent National Historic Site and Section 11 would establish the St. Croix National Heritage Area, both in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 am in SD-366 Dirksen.  The Department’s witness will be Eileen Sobek, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs.
