Local Students Produce Short-Form Documentaries About Park

Colorado National Monument

National Park News

Thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation and support from the Colorado National Monument Association, 19 students from School District 51’s Central High School participated in a week-long residential film camp recently held at Colorado Mesa University.

Their assignment? Choose a topic relevant to Colorado National Monument, interview local experts, and shoot footage for their two-to-four minute videos. The topics chosen varied from highlighting new rock work on Serpent’s Trail to showcasing the excitement of visitors bicycling Rim Rock Drive to sharing the monument’s stories of geology and erosion.

“The film camp opened up new worlds for the students – seeing the monument at sunrise, hearing stories of how people enjoy this special place, and introducing a  possible career path for some of them through CMU’s Mass Communication Program,” said Superintendent Lisa Eckert. “We were pleased to be part of this program. The monument’s urban location provided the perfect venue for the partnership of Colorado Mesa University dormitories and expertise. We are so pleased to have been supported locally by the community and nationally with the gift of funding.”
