Speech Choir Presents Dramatic Reading

Fort Scott National Historic Site

National Park News

Fort Scott National Historic Site, through a collaborative partnership with Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the Kansas Humanities Council, recently hosted a free “Shared Stories of the Civil War” presentation by the Baker University Speech Choir.

The speech choir is composed of select members of a university communications workshop who research and create dramatic presentations of poetry, prose, news items, and other materials.

Their performance of “Guerilla Warfare: Bushwhackers & Jayhawkers,” a primary-source script previously developed by the council, captivated the audience and encouraged a post-presentation discussion that was led by Missouri State University professor Jeremy Neely, an expert on the Kansas-Missouri Border War.

This was the fourth “Shared Stories” presentation organized by the park but the first cooperative effort with the young men and women of the Baker University Speech Choir.
