Staff from four divisions at Coronado National Memorial shared their love of reading with local kindergarten classes through a new “Love of Reading Week” program.
Love of Reading Week is a national celebration that promotes an appreciation of literature among students and adults. Across the country, thousands of volunteers read to classrooms full of young, eager children. This was the first year a park from the Southeast Arizona Group participated in the event.
Students had fun learning about local wildlife by listening to a story read by park staff and participating in hands-on activities that helped bring the characters of the book to life. Law enforcement and interpretation rangers, resource management staff, and two SCA interns all participated in launching this new program for the park.
Group superintendent Lane Baker also joined in the fun and read the book The Three Javelinas to a class at Huachuca Mountain Elementary School.
Over 300 students from seven schools in Cochise County participated in the programs. The event was a success and plans for next year include expanding the celebration to include participation from staff at two other Southeast Arizona Group parks.
