Canaveral National Seashore enlisted some Junior Rangers to assist in collecting food and non-perishable items to help local people in need as part of the national "Feds Feed Families" campaign.
Canaveral interpretive ranger Michelle Woulard and teacher-ranger-teacher Evelyn Jordan put the call out to seashore volunteers and Junior Rangers, asking them to help meet the campaign goal of collecting give pounds of food or non-perishable items per federal employee.
On a hot August afternoon, these Junior Rangers had a lot of fun learning about the seashore and about how they could help others. Each participant brought in a canned good and then stuck around to help load about 500 pounds of food and other necessities onto the waiting food bank truck.
The Junior Rangers learned that almost a third of children living in the local area go without nutritious meals daily, especially in the summer when school is not in session.
Park staff, volunteers and Junior Rangers collected a total of over 1,000 pounds of food and other items, which were then donated to local food banks in two counties.
