National Park News

Monumental Majesty – 100 Years of Colorado National Monument was recently named best anthology in the 21st annual Colorado Book Awards ceremony in Aspen.

The book tells the dramatic story of the monument’s first century in 127 pages of feature articles and stunning photography. It won the top honor Friday, June 22nd, in an annual contest that drew 169 entries in 12 categories.

Monumental Majesty was published in 2011, the same year in which Colorado National Monument celebrated its centennial.

The book features photos of National Park Service employees at work. It includes articles by NPS employees and photos provided by National Park Service archives.

The book was edited by Laurena Davis, managing editor of The Daily Sentinel newspaper in Grand Junction. The Daily Sentinel published the book and provided most of the articles and photos for the book.

Michelle Wheatley, chief of interpretation at Colorado National Monument, said the book’s success is a valuable example of partnership and collaboration between Colorado National Monument and The Daily Sentinel.

“It was an incredible honor to be part of this project and memorable experience to work with such a talented group of people,” Wheatley said. “Monumental Majesty speaks volumes about the excellence of Laurena Davis and all The Daily Sentinel staff that worked on the project. Truly inspirational!”

Legendary documentary film-maker Ken Burns, who wrote the book’s foreword, described Monumental Majesty as “a superb history, a narrative about… the people who fought to set aside this place for us to enjoy forever.”

Copies of “Monumental Majesty” are available for sale at Colorado National Monument’s Visitor Center, and at
