Rangers stayed busy during the 101st annual Bay to Breakers foot race on May 20th at Ocean Beach, just outside the park. Rangers managed the event using horse patrol, bicycles, 4x4 vehicles, and on foot throughout the day. The race, a San Francisco tradition that brings in 40,000 registered participants, can double in size with unofficial participants and spectators. Although alcohol is not tolerated, rangers made over one hundred law enforcement contacts for alcohol related cases, minor drug possession, and property disputes. One Taser was deployed to stop a fight in progress. Maintenance staff assisted with the large amount of trash that ended up on park property. The combined efforts of Golden Gate NRA’s staff did a commendable job keeping Ocean Beach a safe and visitor friendly location throughout the festive and sometimes rowdy event.
